Making Projects Work for You

Some options:

Short Description:

An introduction to delivering projects in the New World business environment. An introduction to the types of change encountered and how some project management tools might help.

Style:

Inspirational chalk and talk with examples.

Advantages Disadvantages

· Cheap

· May not have a lasting impact

· Will work with up to 40 participants

· Can make project working a corporate fad

· A ‘toe in the water’ test of Professor Eddie Obeng’s approach

· No application to real life issues so it is time out of work. In addition, because of the lack of application participants may think that they understand concepts that they don’t

· Easy and quick to set up

· Difficult to move from this to full implementation

Short Description:

A serious intervention to create effective project managers capable of managing and leading the project priorities of the organisation in the New World. The modular design allows for reinforcement of messages and allows participants to transfer learning to the workplace through structured experiments. Modules usually last 2 to 4 days and overall the learning events take a total of 6 to 10 days over two to five modules. (16 participants max.)

Style:

Participants are encouraged to explore issues and challenges and are then guided through dialogue and practice to tools, techniques and behaviours which help. The participants are then coached and encouraged to share learning in the solution of real-life organisational projects.

Advantages Disadvantages

· Effectively addresses real issues

· May be difficult to maintain momentum between modules

· Learning is transferred to the working environment very quickly

· Can create very effective project managers who deliver their projects ignoring the actual organisational priorities for projects

· Opportunity to build and try out skills means project leader behaviour is more effective

· Can undermine/ disrupt the normal organisational processes as project managers become more effective at ‘liberating resources’ to support their project

· Can be built on and extended at a further date

· Learning isn’t captured for new induction candidates

Short Description:

A 'continuous' learning approach to create effective project managers capable of managing and leading the project priorities of the organisation in the New World. The use of on-line GroupWare (shared access software as an intranet) allows the course to continue at the participants' desks. This provides on-line tutors for coaching and challenging as well as an opportunity for participants to share best practice and put peer pressure on each other to improve how they manage projects. (16 participants max.)

Style:

Participants are encouraged to explore issues and challenges and are then guided through dialogue and review to tools and techniques which result in solutions. This just-in-time learning effectively transfers the new approach into the workplace.

Advantages

Disadvantages

· Use of continuous learning approach ensures real issues are dealt with conclusively

· Requires more effort to set up

· Very effective for supporting Project managers who are spread geographically/ globally and for continuous coaching from tutors also spread geographically/globally (approach favoured by multinational companies)

· May require some internal IT support to provide participants with Web browsers or Lotus Notes

· Captures all the learning which takes place and can be used as the basis of induction for subsequent project managers

· Constant contact with tutors means that learning is constantly reinforced and participants have the courage to fully apply all tools and techniques

Short Description:

Use of a learning process to create a group of well managed and co-ordinated programs of projects linked and co-ordinated with the organisational strategy. A continuous learning process for project leaders is combined with a program management workshop for senior managers (steering groups). In addition, other stakeholders are integrated into the approach and method. (16 participants max.)

Style:

All participants are encouraged to start to ‘talk’ projects especially the stakeholders.

Advantages

Disadvantages

· Involves all the key players

· May be difficult to set up and manage.

· Creates a co-ordinated set of organisational programs which will be achieved through well run projects.

· May require some internal IT support to provide participants with Web browsers or Lotus Notes

· Avoids usual resistance to change since continuous learning approach provides ample time for people to understand and come to terms with the approach.

· Hooks into the organisational culture.
